Patchwork winter bags and rusty garden colours

Winter isn't over yet, so I decided to  make some more bags from tapestry fabric, wool, cotton, embroidery.
Friends really liked the rusty one I made in the Fall. I get inspired, lots of times, by the colours in my garden. The Lagerstroemia below, has beautiful pink flowers in summer, but in October the leaves start to change colour!

The picture was taken while it was raining. When the sun is shining the colours are even more vibrant!

I made a second bag in rust colours. Appliqued a beige flower on one side of the bag and sew a crocheted granny square on the other side.

I didn't make the granny square. A very good friend of mine made it. The flower is cut out of tapestry fabric.

I love the colour combinations of the flowers below, the rust and the purplish blue. This picture was taken in spring!! But the colours remind me more of Autumn.

Last year I went with my friend Theodora to the flea market in Athens.
I bought a few pieces of embroidery. The one below was in a frame, which was, according to the vendor, a beautiful frame!!!! Well, the frame went in the recycle bin and I kept the lovely landscape.

The pictures aren't very good, but, as I sold the bag, I can't make better ones!

A few day ago I finished a purple bag. One of these days I will post the pictures.

And, to stay in the colour scheme a picture of my Clematis "Alice Fisk"

Mania Xatziioannidou wrote an article about our Spartan Quilting Bee for is the main crafts website for Greek crafters.

We thank her so much for that!

I will post it also here, so that you all can read it.

Άλλη μια μέλισσα που τριγυρνάει στη Σπάρτη / Another bee at Sparta

It is obvious, that since I wrote this, the bee of the title is a quilting bee!

You might remember that in my previous article, I wrote about Kristin and Thomas who organized a quilting exhibition in Thessaloniki and then took this exhibition to many cities in Greece. One of those cities was Sparta.

This exhibition took place at the Library of Sparta and attracted the attention of many women to the technique of quilting.

Ada Kopitopoulou was living in Sparta. She is a quilter. She attended the conference in Thessaloniki, where she was one of the interpreters of the conference. Furthermore, three of her quilts were presented in the exhibition in Sparta.

When women in Sparta asked how learn the quilting technique, it was Kristin, who suggested to Ada to teach. Ada had never thought of it. Besides, as she says, she has never been taught patchwork in an "official way". But does it a matter?
Even those who were taught in a class, they moved forward by themselves after the first lessons. A class, a teacher can only show you the way. It is up to you to keep this way a narrow path or to turn it to a wide avenue.

So Ada started teaching just after the exhibition. And then her students loved quilting and wanted to keep in touch, because they had a great time, they learned new techniques and made beautiful things.  Somehow like that the quilting bee of Sparta started. They aim to make a few quilts of various sizes, in order to give them to people in need next Christmas.

How do they work? Each one of them makes a specific number of pieces and then they get all together once a month to join their pieces and continue the work on the quilt.

Ladies of Sparta and why not Gentlemen, should you be interested, look for Ada and her bees. You will learn to make beautiful things, have a great time and help some people in need.
Furthermore, they plan to organize an exhibition with their projects during next spring. They will include every item they have quilted. I hope they will remember to invite us to admire their work.

Should you have a small team willing to show us your work, please send me a message ( Furthermore, I created a team on Facebook "Και στην Ελλλάδα αγαπάμε το πάτσγουωρκ",  that I encourage you to join. This is mainly a Greek-speaking team, but our English speaking friends are more than welcome too. The page "Quilters of Greece United" will stay also on FB.

First finished project this year

With all the plans I have for this year I needed a big agenda!!  It has to become a kind of agenda/journal, where I can write everything I am doing and everything I would like to do. The choice in agenda's is getting smaller every year. People use their computers/laptops/notebooks/tablets to write down their appointments. But, as I am a bit old-fashioned in this respect, I bought a paper one. I didn't like the designs I could choose from, so what better to do than to make a cover!

Last summer I cut out a lot of "stamp" pieces from scraps. I have a whole box full. So I used some of these stamps with other fabrics to get a vintage style cover. I must say that I am rather pleased with the result.
Happy cover for happy goals!!

Sewing up Christmas fabric scraps

Before putting my Christmas fabrics away - in a suitcase on top of a closet - I did sew up some of the scraps.

A few mug rugs

I made 4 snowmen placemats. I made pictures of all of them on another table, but as the light over there wasn't good enough, the pictures don't look very nice. This one I put on the wedding chest, just like the mug rugs. Maybe it is a good idea to find/create a spot to make photographs with proper lighting. Especially for the quilts, because I have an issue there too. Another New Year's resolution!!!!

Saturday, January 4, 2014

I have neglected my blog for a while; too busy! One of my New Year's resolutions is to write regularly. So, here we go!!
I was making Christmas runners, cushions, wall hangings, mug rugs, and so more for a bazaar I held at my house a week before Christmas. The bazaar was great, and we all had a good time. Especially the carrot cake (an English recipe) was a big success. I love carrot cake, especially with a topping of philadelphia with lemon.
I didn't manage to make pictures of all the things I made. Just a few.

The cushions and one of the runners. I extended this runner on both sides with another 50 cm because the friend who wanted it has a very big dining table and she wanted it to hang over on both sides of the table.

It is time now to put away the Christmas decorations. The house looks so empty the first week, and I miss the lights. I love candles and put lots of tea lights between the decorations.

I wish you all a very happy and healthy 2014
